This case got another leaf to its over sized chapters. Probably, a beginning to a healthy browser wars(Read more here)
Neelie Kroes, Europe’s competition commissioner, announced that she had reached a settlement with the software giant. Starting next March, in Europe at least, all versions of Windows will come with a “choice screen” rather than just an already-installed version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. This will list 12 web browsers, including Microsoft’s and those provided by competitors. Computer users will be able to pick their favourite. (Here is complete Microsoft Statement )
This decision is of high interest for rest of the world also as they also want to see end to the Monopoly that IE has on a Windows Machine. Even if we have other Web Browsers installed on top of Windows XP which comes pre-installed with IE, their are certain tasks which would automatically start IE and ask the user to change its default browser to IE. This thing annoys every lover of Firefox or Chrome like me.
The good news is that we have the opportunity to educate users about turning off IE and if enough people do that, then the vendors who hard-link to IE will probably stop doing so, instead calling the default browser through that proper API. Windows live messenger for instance.
Microsoft finally is not being evil!!
