The search for high quality music videos *with lyrics* came to an end, on December 6, 2009, when a group of music group owners joined the Google’s all in cloud, all for free bandwagon.

As per Wikipedia:

Vevo is an online music video website owned by Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, EMI and Abu Dhabi Media Company. It is developed and hosted by YouTube, Sony, and Google Videos, with content being initially provided by Universal Music Group.

It began operations at midnight of 6 December 2009. Google’s YouTube video service will host Universal content on the satellite website. Through this partnership, Google and Universal will split advertising revenues.

Vevo is not designed to be exclusive to Universal, but currently only Universal is signed up to offer its content. Universal CEO Doug Morris claims it plans to work with other toprecord labels to host content from elsewhere.

Vevo is currently only available to privileged residents of USA, Canada and Japan. While viewers from other countries see the following message:

Well, well we all know that video hosting… uhh wait a minute. HQ video hosting is very expensive, and the VEVO team will have to find out really efficient ways to propagate it to masses all over the globe.

But the smart ones out there can surely spoof the IP address to get it going. I am sure they would witness a dead slow speed though due to non-localized servers.

Hosting does cost a lot of money, and we have already seen youtube struggling for it, so in case of VEVO, the ads are presented as a backdrop of few sponsored videos:

The player looks pretty polished and nice. It provides links for iTunes and Amazon MP3. Probably that is one way they are trying to get some bucks. Also most of the videos have the Lyrics option too, I would guess Google’s voice to text algorithm is at work:

Me along with all the Music enthusiasts would hope that this project grows up and become an indispensable part of our life.
