Switching phones is fun, but configuring email, contacts and calendars isn’t.

Well Google has a solution. Google is now officially supporting sync for most of the smartphone platforms.

If you are an Android user, then you would enjoy these functionalities natively, but even on other platforms, you may rejoice the Google service. The following chart represents the compatibility:

In order to get your phone specific instructions, you simply need to visit m.google.com/sync website from your phone’s browser. Google will automatically detect your OS and provide you the needed instructions.

I recently got a new iPhone 3GS. I had the entire backup of my contacts and calendar on my computer, but I had them also synced up with my Google account. I tried Google sync, and by the time I reached my car from the Apple store, I had all the contacts, emails and calendar events on my phone. Fast, easy and simple!

Below are the step-by-step screen shots of how you can achieve this on an iPhone:

1. Here you see, contacts are blank before the setup:

2. Now fire up the Mail app and select the Microsoft Exchange option. (Yes, select Exchange, not Gmail!)

3. Now enter your Gmail credentials (Complete email address as username, leave Domain as blank):

4. After you click next, it will verify and then a new block for “Server” would come up, fill it with “m.google.com”

5. Now mark all the options On, or set them as per your preference:

It would take around 5-10 minutes to download the content, depending on your internet connection speed.

Hope this helps!
